Comparison
FrameTrain vs. MLX LoRA Studio. Lean trainer or the whole workflow?
Both put fine-tuning behind an interface on your Mac. MLX LoRA Studio is a free, open-source Mac app on Apple’s MLX that focuses on training language models. FrameTrain is a desktop app for Mac, Windows and Linux that also covers building datasets and testing the finished model.

Deciding
Which one fits you?
Choose FrameTrain if …
- you still need to build and label your dataset
- you want to test the model and feed its mistakes back into training
- you train image models as well as language models
- you also work on Windows or Linux, or with an NVIDIA GPU
- you want versioned training runs in one place
Choose MLX LoRA Studio if …
- you only fine-tune language models
- you only work on an Apple Silicon Mac
- your dataset is already on Hugging Face or in the right format
- you want many training methods such as DPO, ORPO or GRPO
- you want a free, open-source tool
The core
Two good tools with a different focus.
MLX LoRA Studio is built around the training step itself: pick a model and dataset, choose the method, watch the metrics, upload the adapter. It runs on MLX, Apple’s own framework, and is tightly tuned to the Mac. It deliberately is not a chat app or inference server – you serve the result with tools like mlx-lm or Ollama.
FrameTrain starts earlier and ends later. It starts with collecting and labelling data in the Dataset Builder, and it ends with testing in the Laboratory, feeding mistakes back and serving the model through the local API. It trains with PyTorch, which means the same project also runs on a Windows PC with an NVIDIA card.
Frequently asked questions
No. FrameTrain trains with PyTorch and Hugging Face and uses Metal (MPS) on Apple Silicon. That is why it also runs on Windows and Linux with NVIDIA GPUs.
Yes. MLX LoRA Studio is open source under the MIT licence. It needs macOS 14 or later on Apple Silicon.
No. Both need a Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or later).
